I WAS JUST SERVED WITH A DIVORCE. WHAT DO I DO?

You definitely need good advice at this time. Everything you own, everything you earn, and your right to see your children are now at stake. While you may know a number of people who have been divorced, they are not qualified to give you advice. You need to speak with an experienced divorce lawyer to find out how to protect yourself. You also need to do it right away because you have a very limited amount of time to respond. Otherwise, you may lose your right to make decisions in your case. Things can move pretty quickly in a divorce and you need to protect yourself. Once you do hire a good divorce attorney, you can rely on them to handle all of the technicalities. Prior to that time, however, you are on your own and will be held to the same standard as an attorney. This is a very difficult job for someone with no legal training or experience.

WHICH DIVORCE LAWYER SHOULD I HIRE?

You should select a divorce attorney just like you would pick anyone else to do an important job. See how much experience they have. Do they specialize in family law, or is it just one of the things they do? Can anyone you trust give you a referral? What have past clients said about them on the internet? Get a consultation with the attorneys you are considering. See if you would feel comfortable working with any of them and if they know what they are talking about. Do you think they will make your case a priority? Were they able to answer all of your questions? Did they seem realistic or were they just trying to tell you what you wanted to hear? Make sure you are clear about how you will be charged for their services. In the end, you will have to go with your gut instinct. Does that attorney seem like the right person for you? If you have any reservations, you should probably continue to look until you find the right person for you. Choosing the wrong family law attorney can have a very damaging effect on your financial future and your ability to spend quality time with your children. Choose wisely.

I DON’T KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON IN MY CASE BECAUSE MY ATTORNEY NEVER RETURNS MY CALLS!!!

Divorce is traumatic even under the best of circumstances and only gets worse when you don’t understand what is going on. It is a complex process that will have a significant impact on all of the aspects of your life. Not knowing or understanding what’s going on in your case can make it terrifying. You need to make sure that the attorney you have selected is available to answer your questions when you need them, help you to understand what is going on, and actually listen to your concerns. Since you will be the one making the important decisions in your case, you need to understand what it is all about and what is going on. If you feel your lawyer doesn’t make keeping you informed a priority, you’re in the wrong place and need to find an attorney who will.
