Choosing the Right Attorney

A) Selecting the right divorce attorney is very difficult for a number of reasons:

First, the stakes are very high. The decisions you make in your divorce will most likely be some of the most important ones you will ever make. They include when you will see your children, who will make the important decisions for them, how much money you will either pay or receive for support, how long the payment of support lasts, what your property is really worth, how it will be divided, who will pay what debts, how can you assure they are paid, and many, many, more.

Second, you are on very unfamiliar ground. You are most likely not familiar with all of the attorneys in town and have no idea which one is best for you. Due to the importance of the decisions made in your case, you need the assistance of a very competent attorney, e.g., one that you feel comfortable talking to, one that has enough experience to give you the right advice, and one that is not afraid to litigate your case should the situation arise.

Third, you don’t know how much it’s going to cost you. Just like most things in life, you usually get what you pay for. The more experienced attorney you pick, the more they charge. The quality of the attorney you choose becomes more important as the amount of property you own gets bigger and the greater the conflict. While it never hurts to have the best attorney you can find, you need to be willing (and able) to pay for their services.

B) You need to put in the effort necessary to make the right decision.

Start by doing research on the family law attorneys in Fresno. Review their websites for important information, e.g., how long have they been practicing law, is family law the only area of law they practice, did they graduate from both a good college and law school, have they received any awards for their work, etc. Review their profile on the California Bar Association website, e.g., have they ever been disciplined for bad behavior, have they ever been suspended from the practice of law, etc. Look up the attorney’s reviews on the internet, e.g., what do past clients say about their work. These reviews will probably be a good indicator of how they will perform in your case.

Once you complete all these steps, you will have narrowed down the ones you are considering to a very few. Of these attorneys, you will want to see them in person for a consultation. During your consultation, you will get a very good idea of who they are, whether you will be able to work with them, and understand their approach to how they practice law. Expect to pay for a consultation if they are a good attorney because their services are most likely in high demand. If an attorney provides a free consultation, there is likely little demand for his or her services.

Once you have taken all of these steps, it will become very apparent who you should choose. Unfortunately, there are no short cuts for making this very difficult decision, but your efforts will pay off in the long run. See how our firm stacks up.
